Pronunciation

Vowels vary depending on whether they are in "open" (ending with a vowel) or "closed" (ending with a consonant) syllables. When a single consonant occurs between two vowels, it's part of the following syllable, so the one preceding it is open. When consonants representing two or more sounds appear together, the first belongs to the syllable before, making that syllable closed. A single vowel is short in a closed syllable and long in an open one; a doubled vowel is always long.

a = shortened "ah" when short, "ah" when long
e = between short a and short e when short, "eh" when long, but always "uh" at the end of a word
i = short i when short, "ee" when long, but "y" when following a long vowel or diphthong
ei, ij = English long i, except for lijk at the end of a work, which is pronounced "luck"
eu = German ü (pronounce "ee" while mouthing "oo")
ieuw = pronounced like the word "yew"
o = "aw" when short, "oh" when long
oe = "oo"
ou = "ow"
u = "uh" when short, tight "ew" when long
ui = diphthong of "uh" plus "y"
uw = long u
y is equivalent to i
b = "p" at the end of a word, as in English otherwise
c = "s" before i or e, "k" otherwise
ch = German or Yiddish ch
d = "t" at the end of a word, like English otherwise
g = ch even further back in the throat
j = "y"
k is always pronounced even before n
ng = always like the end of sing
r is dark, like a French r
sch = s + ch, except when followed by r or part of isch at the end of a word; in these cases, it's just "s"
w = weak "v", midway between "v" and "w"
f, h, l, m, n, p, s, t, v, x, z are all as in English.
