Pronunciation

a, e, o, u are Latin vowels
aa, ah = long "ah"
ä = long a, as in bugbear
äh = double-length ä
e in er is more of an "uh" sound
ee, eh = long "eh"
i = "ih" like bit
ih, ie = "ee"
oo, oh = long "oh"
ö does not have a counterpart in English; you can approximate it by mouthing "oh" while saying "uh".
ü does not exist in English; purse your lips as though to say "oo" but pronounce "ee"
öh, üh are long versions of ö and ü respectively.
ai, ay, ei = long i as in fire
au = "ow"
eu = "oi"
c = "ts" except in combinations noted below
ch is articulated in the same area as English h, but with the back of the tongue closer to the roof of the mouth, making a fricative (like s or f). Preceding a, o, or u, it is a little more to the back of the mouth; preceding other vowels, a little futher forward. Exception: see sch.
ck is like k
h is silent following a vowel, but like English h elsewhere
j = "y"
r is like the French r, dark and pronounced at the back of the mouth, in the same area as ch.
s = English z before vowels, s elsewhere except in the following combinations.
sch = "sh"
sp = "shp"
st = "sht"
v = "f"
w = "v"
z = "ts"
b, d, g as in English except when at the end of the word or followed by s or t, when they become unvoiced.
k, l, m, n, ng, p, ph, qu, t, y are the same as in English.
